Nenagh Ormond U16’s continued their Munster cup campaign with a match under lights on Saturday evening in Lisatunney. Conditions were good, with the strong wind from earlier during the seniors super win v Ballymena having abated by kick off time. Nenagh had a number of players back from injury but started a bit sluggishly, despite holding the ball for periods, some errors allowed Fermoy of the hook. A bout of pressure in our own 22 led to Fermoy taking the lead with a converted try after 10 minutes, and play remained scrappy until half time. However, as half time approached Nenagh finally began to hang onto the ball and they scored a try under the posts by Stephen Armitage, who was making his return after a few weeks out injured. With Darragh Gleeson off the field, Cillian Healy slotted the conversion to leave the score 7 all at half time. Fermoy came out hard at the start of the second half, encouraged by their vocal coaches and supporters and the kicked a penalty to go 10 7 ahead. However, from then on Nenagh took general control of the match, another close in try was scored by Stephen and the conversion was good and this was followed by a super individual score from the half way line by the returning Conor Gleeson, who had come on at half time, for U15 player Brehon O’Donnell, who had another fine game.. Conor has missed all the games so far due to hurling commitments in early season and latterly injury but he made a huge difference in the second half, topped off by his excellent try. Darragh was back and the conversion was good to leave us 11 points ahead but in fairness to Fermoy, back they came again and scored an unconverted try wide out to bring it back to a one score game. Nenagh though were winning cleaner ball after the half time chat about rucking and Darragh Gleeson received a ball after a number of phases and outstripped the defence from just inside his own half and he converted his own try to leave the score 28 15 to the home team.  A late try from a lineout move in the dying minutes By Ethan Kennedy, which was unconverted, capped a good second half performance by the Nenagh boys, the final score Nenagh 33 Fermoy 15. With a few players out in the last numbers of weeks the rustiness on the first half was shaken off and a good performance next Saturdayaway to Killoglin in our final group game will be required if the outside chance of making the cup quarter finals is to be achieved. We will be relying on results elsewhere to qualify but you never know in sport. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday in Tyone.
